The Nordic Ski Scene | Big Sky, Bozeman and West Yellowstone

Big Sky and Bozeman are known for their exceptional downhill skiing, but their Nordic ski areas are equally impressive. At the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park, West Yellowstone also boasts a great trail system and Yellowstone itself is a beautiful place for cross-country skiing. Each area has a different vibe, but all of them take you deep into the woods for an experience you won’t soon forget.

Lone Mountain Ranch

Voted Cross Country Skier magazine’s #1 Nordic Ski Destination in North America, Lone Mountain Ranch has 85 km of trails for a wide range of abilities. The courses are carefully maintained, and guides are available to show you the lay of the land. Lone Mountain is a complete resort, so consider making a stay of it and enjoy one of their cozy cabins and either a sleigh-ride dinner or dine at their well-loved restaurant, Horn and Cantle.

Crosscut Mountain Sports Center

Located 17 miles north of Bozeman in the Bridger Mountain Range, Crosscut Mountain Sports Center has 500+ acres adjacent to Bridger Bowl Ski Area and Custer Gallatin National Forest. 45 km of trails are groomed seven days a week and provide both cross-country and narrow-gauge trails. In addition, specific areas are available for fat biking, snowshoeing, and biathlon. For those just getting started, Crosscut offers gear rentals and lessons. If you’re an athlete in training, they also provide coaching.

Rendezvous Ski Trails

In West Yellowstone, Rendezvous Ski Trails has 35 km of gently rolling, beautifully groomed trails. Biathlon races also take place monthly.

Yellowstone National Park

Most of Yellowstone National Park is closed to vehicular travel during the winter, but all unplowed roads and trails are open to Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. There’s nothing quite like gliding through this vast, wide-open space. Be sure to talk to a ranger before you go, and be mindful of unpredictable wildlife, changing weather conditions, and hydrothermal areas.
