Welcome to Gallatin Canyon
The Scenic Gallatin Canyon, where scenes from the movie A River Runs Through It was filmed, is known as the Canyon section of Big Sky. Highway 191 makes its way from the Bozeman area to the North and West Yellowstone to the south, following the beautiful Gallatin River to the turnoff to Big Sky’s Meadow Village (one mile up the road), Big Sky Town Center (two miles up the road), and Big Sky Resort (nine miles up the road). Many people opt to live or stay in the Canyon area, which features a variety of dining and lodging options, along with riverfront homes, custom mountain homes, cabins, and home sites.
Life in the Gallatin Canyon features a myriad of wildlife and outdoor activities. Bald eagles, bighorn sheep, bears, moose, elk, mountain goats, deer, and coyotes are among some of the wildlife that can be spotted throughout. In the summer months, many people recreate on the Gallatin River, fishing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, or scouring the banks for petrified wood and fossils. The Canyon also features spectacular hiking, mountain biking, and rock-climbing opportunities that lead to great heights above the valley floor for endless photo opportunities. Whatever your pleasure, don’t miss this wonderful part of Southwest Montana.
